How will I know you are from Safeguard It when you knock on my door?

All our staff carry an ID card and wear Safeguard It uniforms, which comprise of a navy polo shirt with the Safeguard It logo on the front, navy trousers, and a navy fleece.

To protect the safety of local residents, we also carry out CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checks on all staff before they join us.

We have now finished visiting streets in the St Peter’s ward of Ashton carrying out home fire risk assessments. If anyone still wishes for us to visit, then contact us in Denton South then Stalybridge North.

What is a home fire risk assessment?

A trained member of staff will visit your home and

  • Make you aware of the potential fire risks in your home

  • Make sure you know what to do to reduce or prevent these risks

  • Help you put together an escape plan in case a fire breaks out

  • Ensure you have a working smoke alarm, and if you don't, fit a free smoke alarm with a ten year battery

If you are considered to be at particular risk, you may also be offered additional free fire safety equipment.

Why is it important to have a home fire risk assessment?

Home fire risk assessments not only help save lives by preventing accidental fires, but also reduce the amount of time and money spent by the emergency services on dealing with fires which might have been prevented. What is more, the service will cost you nothing.

Do you do home fire risk assessments in the evening and at weekends?

We offer home fire risk assessments between 10-30am - 8pm Monday to Wednesday and 10-30am - 6-30pm Thursday.

I know someone who would like a home fire risk assessment but doesn’t speak any English. Can you help?

We have carried out a number of home fire risk assessments for people who speak little or no English. Our team includes members of staff who speak Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Dutch and Polish. We also have materials which are suitable for people who speak little or no English. Alternatively, you can make an appointment for a time when you know someone will be available to interpret. How do I get voluntary work with Safeguard It?

If you are interested in volunteering with Safeguard It, phone Kerry on 0161 214 8317 to make an appointment. You will need to fill in a volunteer application form, and have a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check done. We will provide you with all the training you need, and support you throughout your placement.

We recruit our workers from amongst our volunteers, and via St Peter’s People, our employment and learning service. How do I report my neighbour for fly-tipping?

To report someone who is fly-tipping online go to http://public.tameside.gov.uk/forms/f418Offenders.asp, or phone Tameside MBC on 0161 342 8355. You do not need to worry about the person involved finding out, as your personal details will not be shared with anyone without your express permission.

What training do your staff receive?

All the staff who carry out home fire risk assessments receive special training which includes

  • completing home fire risk assessments (practical and theory)

  • fire prevention awareness

  • identifying hazards

  • health and safety awareness

  • first aid training

  • customer service

  • time management

  • looking for job vacancies, completing job applications, and interview techniques

All new members of staff shadow an experienced team leader before carrying out home fire risk assessments themselves.
