Where is the Community Development team based?

We are based at St. Peters Training Centre (formaly The Portland Centre) Blandford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne OL6 7HS. We are always happy to see local residents, so feel free to pop in.

How can I apply for a grant from the St Peter’s Community Grants Fund?

The St Peter’s Community Grants Fund gives small grants to voluntary and community groups working with residents of the St Peter’s ward of Ashton. Priority is given to activities which would mainly involve St Peter’s ward residents. The Community Grants fund will pay for equipment, activities, training and start-up costs. What activities has the Community Grants Fund funded in the past?

Activities we have funded in the past year have included Khush Amdid’s Eid and Christmas celebration, Tameside Women’s Roshni Group’s crèche, the start up and open day costs for the ‘Cranberries 2, and a Guide Bridge Youth Theatre production. Over the past three years, we have awarded just over £65,000 to local community groups.

How can I find out what activities are happening in the local community?

What are Street Reps, and how can I get involved?

Street Reps are a network of volunteers covering the whole of the West End and Holy Trinity areas of Ashton, who deliver newsletters to the streets near where they live. This means that local residents can find out about what is happening in the local community. Being a Street Rep does not involve a big time commitment - about 20 minutes or so, once every three months. What is the Community Committee?

The Community Committee is a group of local residents, and representatives from community and voluntary organisations and groups. The Community Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at different community venues to discuss local issues, and promote activities which are happening in the community. What is PACT?

PACT stands for Police and Communities Together. It’s a Greater Manchester Police initiative which exists to encourage better relations between the Police and local residents. PACT meetings give residents an opportunity to raise concerns about crime problems in the area, and enable the police to let residents know what they’re doing to address their concerns. What do residents associations do?

Residents associations are neighbourhood based forums for discussing issues that affect a particular area, rather than the town in general. There are active residents associations for people who live in Holy Trinity, the West End, the Richmond Estate, Assheton House and Burlington House. New members are always welcome. How can I volunteer in the community?

Contact Volunteer Centre Tameside, which has a database of volunteering opportunities in Tameside. They will also be able to advise you if you are looking for a particular type of voluntary work. Their contact details are as follows:

How can I find out more about the reporters group?

The reporters group report on and take photos of local community events and activities. Their work has been used in the Tameside Reporter newspaper, and the Ashton Pioneer Homes, Ashton Regeneration, and other newsletters. They also have links with Tameside Radio. The group meets every 2 weeks, but on different days and at different times, depending on what they’re working on. You don’t need to have any particular level of language or writing skills to take part, and training is available. How can I find out more about the gardeners group?

The gardeners group have been working on small community gardening projects to brighten up St Peter’s ward. The group meets every 2 weeks, but on different days and at different times, depending on what they’re working on. You don’t need to have any gardening skills to take part.
